Albert of Bavaria ruled Hainaut as regent from 1357 and then as count in right of his wife Margaret from 1389, governing the county from Holland rather than residing in Hainaut itself. His administration was frequently contested, and the coinage of this period reflects a county pulled between Bavarian dynastic interests and the pressures of the Low Countries monetary unions, which repeatedly forced regional lords to align their silver issues with agreed weight and fineness standards — not always successfully.
