The grivennik denomination was revived under Anna Ivanovna as part of a broader monetary reorganization following the chaotic recoinage policies of Peter II's brief reign. Anna's government, heavily influenced by her German Baltic advisers — Ernst Johann von Biron chief among them — pushed to stabilize silver coinage after years of debasement and irregular production at provincial mints. The .802 fineness reflects a deliberate compromise between available bullion and the need to restore confidence in smaller-denomination silver.
Moscow's Kadashevsky mint handled the bulk of production for this type.
