Fernando I's grave was introduced as part of a monetary overhaul driven less by economic planning than by the pressures of the Fernandine Wars against Castile — three conflicts fought between 1369 and 1382 that strained the Portuguese treasury severely. Billon issues like this one were a direct consequence: the crown needed coinage volume, not silver purity. The Porto mint, one of Fernando's most active, struck multiple die variants of the grave in rapid succession, which accounts for the three Gomes reference numbers assigned to what is functionally the same denomination and period.
