William III ruled Hainaut from 1356 until his death in 1389, but his coinage policy was shaped as much by French monetary fashion as by local necessity. The franc à cheval type originated with John II of France in 1360 — struck to fund his ransom after capture at Poitiers — and its prestige spread rapidly into the Low Countries, where princes adopted the format to signal parity with the French crown.
Hainaut's version followed closely on French prototypes in weight standard, allowing it to circulate alongside French issues without discount.
