Obverse description Crowned and nimbate displayed double-headed imperial eagle occupies the central field, its wings spread symmetrically. On the eagle's breast is superimposed a small pointed shield bearing the bipartite coat of arms of Zürich — per pale azure and argent with a diagonal band — rendered in fine relief. The circumferential legend in Latin reads RESPVBLICA · TIGVRINA ·, identifying the issuer as the Republic of Zürich. The crowned heads of the eagle face outward to either side, each surmounted by a nimbus, reflecting the Holy Roman Imperial iconographic tradition.

Reverse description A large cross fleury with pronounced fleurs-de-lis terminating each arm dominates the central field, rendered in high relief with finely detailed scrollwork at the base of each fleur. The cross arms are richly ornamented with architectural column-like shafts and decorative collars characteristic of Renaissance goldsmith work. The circumferential legend in Latin encircles the design close to the beaded border, reading ✿ DOMINE SERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace). A small floral ornament serves as a stop mark at the commencement of the legend. The overall composition reflects the refined artistic style of mid-sixteenth century Swiss municipal coinage.
