Additional information

Bern's goldgulden issues of the late sixteenth century reflect the city-state's growing financial autonomy within the Swiss Confederation, a period during which Bern aggressively expanded its territorial control over the Vaud. The right to strike gold coinage was jealously guarded — and frequently disputed — among the Confederate cantons, making municipal gold issues from this period administratively significant beyond their face value.

The HMZ 2#169 reference places this piece within a well-documented but genuinely scarce series.
