The design is almost entirely devoid of detail, though the underlying celticised rendering of the classical laureate Apollo prototype remains conceptually apparent. The Dobunni occupied the Cotswold region of what is now Gloucestershire and Somerset, and their coinage circulated within a tribal territory that Caesar's campaigns never directly penetrated — unlike their neighbors to the southeast. The "Western Qb" designation distinguishes this stater from related Dobunnic issues by its specific inscription, though the meaning of that abbreviated legend remains unresolved among Celtic numismatists.
Dobunnic gold was alloyed from continental sources, most likely derived from Gaulish coins that entered Britain through trade before local striking began.
