Tincomarus — whose name translates roughly as "great fish" — was a son of Commius, the Atrebatan king who had served as Caesar's envoy during the Gallic campaigns before spectacularly defecting to lead resistance against Roman forces. Tincomarus broke sharply from his father's anti-Roman politics, cultivating close ties with Augustus, a relationship confirmed by his appearance in the Res Gestae as one of the British rulers who sent embassies to Rome. This coin belongs to that accommodation period, when southern British elites were actively adopting Roman iconographic conventions to signal their alignment with the new imperial power.
He was eventually expelled — likely by his brother Eppillus — and fled to Augustus, probably around 7 AD.
