| 表面の説明 | Highly stylised, abstract rendering of an Apollo head facing right, executed in the fluid Celtic artistic tradition. A hairbar composed of two corded parallel lines divides the design, below which a symmetrical wreath is depicted with the inner edges of its leaves directed upward toward a central spike. The facial element takes the form of a so-called turf-cutter motif — an axehead-shaped outline bordered by a bristle arc — from which three splayed lines extend rearward to connect with a series of linear crescent-shaped curls. A vertical cloak rendered in five or more corded lines descends behind the composition, reinforcing the abstracted, ornamental character of this early British Celtic coinage. |

The Atrebates arrived in southern Britain from Belgic Gaul in the early first century BC, bringing Continental coinage traditions with them. The Early Cheriton stater series descends, through multiple generations of stylistic degradation, from the Macedonian gold staters of Philip II — the abstracted design drifting further from its source with each successive die. Sills' classification places this type precisely within that degeneration sequence, anchoring it chronologically to the decades just before Caesar's invasions of 55 and 54 BC scrambled the political arrangements of the southeastern tribes entirely.
