正面描述 Highly stylised and abstracted head of Apollo facing right, rendered in characteristic Late Iron Age Celtic manner. The design features curvilinear elements representing a wreath and draped cloak, with prominent crescents and scrollwork derived from the Classical prototype. A cluster of large pellets is disposed in the lower field beneath the cloak, a diagnostic feature of this type. The overall composition is bold and deeply struck, with the abstract linear motifs typical of the Belgic artistic tradition.

附加信息

The Cheriton Wheel type takes its name from a hoard found near Cheriton, Hampshire, and belongs to a sequence of Atrebatic coinage that developed independently from continental Gaulish prototypes — diverging progressively further from the original Macedonian stater designs that crossed the Channel with migrating tribes and mercenaries returning from service under Hellenistic commanders. By this point in the sequence, the abstraction is so advanced that the Philippic ancestry is largely theoretical.

The ABC 758 reference places this firmly within Richard Hobbs and Philip de Jersey's classification framework established through British Museum Iron Age studies, cross-referenced against the Celtic Coin Index at Oxford.
