Gold Stater

The Ambiani occupied territory roughly corresponding to modern Picardy, and their gold staters circulated extensively among the allied tribes that formed the core of the Belgic coalition documented by Caesar during the Gallic Wars. Caesar specifically names the Ambiani in *De Bello Gallico* as contributing forces against Rome — these coins were almost certainly the medium through which warrior payments and inter-tribal obligations were settled during that mobilization. Production effectively ceased as Roman administrative control consolidated after 51 BC, making later examples in this date range increasingly scarce.
