Issued to mark fifty years of Indian independence, this was part of a broader commemorative program the Reserve Bank of India released in 1997 alongside silver and base-metal pieces. Gold rupee denominations had effectively vanished from everyday Indian currency decades earlier, making this issue a deliberate historical callback rather than a functional coin. The rupee itself had been decimalized in 1957, and gold coinage had ceased as a circulating reality long before that.
