Charles II of Navarre — "Charles the Bad" to contemporaries — struck this royal during one of the most audacious phases of his career. In 1358 and 1359 he was simultaneously negotiating with the English, exploiting the Jacquerie uprising, and maneuvering to claim the French throne itself, positioning his County of Évreux as a staging ground for intervention in a kingdom convulsed by the aftermath of Poitiers. Coinage was leverage. The PA#182 var. designation flags a die difference not fully resolved in the standard literature.
