Gold Rider - Charles III

Charles III ruled Savoy for nearly five decades but spent much of that reign politically paralyzed — caught between Francis I of France and Charles V of Habsburg, he lost effective control of his territories when French forces occupied most of the duchy in 1536. Coinage continued to be struck in his name despite the occupation, making the precise attribution of individual pieces within this long series genuinely difficult.

The "Gold Rider" type takes its name from the equestrian motif, a format with deep Burgundian roots that Savoy adopted to project dynastic prestige it could rarely back with military force.
