South Ferriby types were struck by the Corieltavi of eastern Britain, and contemporary counterfeits of this stater are well documented — plated forgeries produced close enough in time to the originals to circulate alongside them. The gold-plated bronze technique, known as subaeratus in the Roman tradition, required skill to execute convincingly, and examples from this regional type suggest local production rather than itinerant forgers. The "owl eyes" designation refers to a specific die-linked grouping identified by Allen in his foundational typology of British Celtic coinage.
