Contemporary counterfeits of the Whaddon Chase stater type — struck in base metal with a thin gold wash rather than cast or struck in solid gold — circulated alongside genuine issues, suggesting organized production rather than opportunistic fraud. The Catuvellauni operated across Hertfordshire and beyond, and their coinage circulated in a region under increasing pressure from Caesar's two British expeditions of 55 and 54 BC. Whether this piece was produced to defraud tribesmen or to meet genuine demand when gold supplies ran short is unanswerable.
The plated fabric occasionally survives intact, but most examples show splitting at the flan edges where bronze core and gold shell have separated with age.
