Contemporary counterfeits of Gallo-Belgic and British stater fractions circulated freely in Iron Age Britain precisely because no issuing authority existed to police the currency — acceptance depended entirely on appearance and social trust, not chemical assay. This plated piece mimics the Regni Ratham Rose type, itself a derivative of Continental prototypes carried across the Channel before and during Caesar's Gallic campaigns of the 50s BC.
The bronze core beneath the gold wash would have been detectable to any careful handler, yet such pieces turn up in hoards alongside genuine issues, suggesting they passed without consistent rejection.
