Contemporary counterfeits of Atrebatic quarter staters are well-documented but rarely survive with plating intact. These were produced locally, almost certainly by individuals familiar enough with the genuine coins to replicate the flan shape and approximate weight — close enough to pass in low-value transactions where close scrutiny was unlikely. The bronze core would have been apparent the moment the plating wore or flaked, which is precisely why intact-plated survivors are so uncommon.
Julius Caesar's two incursions into Britain in 55 and 54 BC disrupted existing tribal exchange networks significantly, and the proliferation of lightweight or debased fractional gold in this window likely reflects that instability.
