Obverse description Effigy of Edward, the Black Prince, shown full-length facing, crowned with a rose wreath, clad in armour, brandishing an upraised sword in his right hand while his left hand is raised in an open gesture. Two leopards couchant appear at his feet, flanked on either side by ostrich feather badges with tips curving inward — emblematic of the Prince of Wales. The entire composition is enclosed within an elaborate ornate Gothic portico, rendered in the characteristic pierced architectural style of English and Gascon hammered gold coinage of the period.
