Obverse description Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, is depicted full-length, facing, within an elaborate ornate Gothic portico. He stands wearing a rose wreath crown, raising his left hand in a gesture of authority while his right hand elevates a drawn sword; at his feet lie two leopards couchant. To either side of the figure, two ostrich feathers with tips curving inward flank the composition, serving as dynastic emblems of the Prince of Wales. The surrounding legend in Gothic lettering identifies the issuer as Prince of Aquitaine and eldest son of the King of England.

Reverse description The reverse presents an ornate cross quernée with a rose at its center, the four quarters alternately charged with a lion passant guardant and a fleur-de-lis. The entire composition is enclosed within an arched quatrefoil set upon a quadrate frame, with roses placed in the angles between the frame and the quatrefoil arches. The external voids of the frame are filled with pelleted trilobes, creating a richly detailed decorative field consistent with the high Gothic aesthetic of Plantagenet coinage. The circumferential legend in Latin invokes divine protection.
