| Aversbeschreibung | Central field displays three horizontal lines of Kufic Arabic legend within a plain inner circle, surmounted by a bold Latin cross above the uppermost line; the abbreviation 'ALF' appears in large Latin characters in the lower register of the central area. A wide annular band separates the central circle from the outer border, itself carrying a continuous Kufic Arabic circular legend. The entire design is framed by a raised beaded border. The composition uniquely blends Christian iconography — the prominent cross — with Arabic script, reflecting the coin's bicultural character as a Christian imitation of Almohad dinars struck for use in Iberian trade. |

Alfonso VIII struck these gold maravedis in direct imitation of the Almoravid dinar, a deliberate monetary calculation: Christian merchants and Muslim traders throughout Iberia trusted the weight and fineness of North African gold coinage, and Alfonso needed that trust to fund his campaigns. The design mimicked Arabic script closely enough to circulate without friction across religious lines.
Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212 — the decisive battle that broke Almohad power in the peninsula — was financed substantially through revenues tied to this coinage. Alfonso died the following year.
