Obverse description Central field depicts a large rampant lion facing left, set atop a heraldic shield of Bourbon arms — party per bend sinister, charged with fleurs-de-lis and a bendlet — the whole composition executed in bold relief typical of late medieval hammered gold coinage. The lion, rendered with flowing mane and extended forepaws, dominates the inner circle and serves as the principal charge alluding to the Prince-Bishopric's sovereignty. Surrounding the central device is a raised beaded inner circle separating the design from the outer legend. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial characters reads: ✠ LVDOVIC ⁑ ELCS ⁑ LEOD ⁑ DVX ⁑ BVLL ⁑ Z ⁑ CO ⁑ LOSS, identifying Louis of Bourbon as elected Prince-Bishop of Liège, Duke of Bouillon, and Count of Looz. The flan is characteristically irregular, as expected of hand-struck medieval gold coinage.
