William IV of Hainaut — also William VI of Holland and Zeeland — issued this gold haie during a period when the Low Countries were deeply fractured by the Hoek and Kabeljauw conflicts, factional civil wars that had destabilized his inherited territories for decades. The haie type takes its name from the hedgehog, a design choice that carried heraldic weight specific to the Hainaut comital tradition rather than any pan-Burgundian monetary program. William died in 1417 without male issue, extinguishing the Wittelsbach line in Hainaut and triggering the succession crisis that ultimately delivered these counties to the Burgundian dukes.
