Reverse description An elaborate cross fleurée and chênée radiates from a central quatrefoil (quadrilobe) boss, dividing the field into four quarters that alternate between a fleur-de-lis and a leopard (lion passant guardant), referencing Edward III's dual claim to France and England. The entire composition is enclosed within a pointed quadrilobe frame, with rosettes ornamenting the four spandrels between the quadrilobe and the outer beaded border. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial letterforms quotes the Gloria in Excelsis Deo, a devotional inscription characteristic of high medieval Anglo-Gascon gold coinage.
