Obverse description A large fleur-de-lis occupies the center of the field, rendered in the Florentine style typical of medieval gold florins. The petals and stamens of the lily are boldly modeled in high relief against the plain gold field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PhS DV BVRGON, an abbreviated form of the issuer's title Philippus Dux Burgundiae. The coin bears the characteristic irregular flan and hand-struck quality associated with hammered coinage of the mid-fourteenth century.
