A beaded inner circle encloses the design, separating it from the outer legend. The peripheral inscription in uncial Latin reads XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, the traditional Carolingian acclamation affirming the sovereignty of Christ. The mint mark A, denoting the Aix-en-Provence mint, appears at the base of the cross.
