Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a large royal crown with elaborate fleurons and arches rendered in high relief characteristic of early sixteenth-century hammered goldwork. The shield is framed within a plain inner border, with the surrounding legend separated by a beaded inner circle. A small annulet or mint mark appears at the beginning of the legend. The irregular flan, typical of hammered coinage, causes partial striking weakness at the periphery.
