| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by a large quartered coat of arms — France ancient (semé of fleurs-de-lis) impaled with England (three leopards passant) in the first and fourth quarters, and France modern (three fleurs-de-lis) with Dauphine (dolphins) in the second and third — surmounted by an ornate crown with fleur-de-lis finial. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, with the mint mark '3' for Grenoble appearing in the legend. The circular Latin legend surrounds the device, reading FRANCISCVS D G FRANCORVM REX L 3, identifying Francis I as king of the Franks by the grace of God. The entire composition is executed in the robust hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century French royal coinage. |
