The écu au soleil had been the workhorse gold coin of the French monarchy since Louis XI, but Francis I's eighth type reflects the administrative reorganization of the Dauphiné mint system in the late 1530s, when royal edicts tightened control over provincial minting to fund the ongoing Italian Wars against Charles V. The Dauphiné's sun privy mark — distinct from the standard écu au soleil's solar device — identifies output from a region whose mint had long enjoyed unusual autonomy relative to Paris.
