At the centre of the cross is a small quatrefoil ornament. A fleur-de-lis surmounts the uppermost arm of the cross, reinforcing the royal Capetian symbolism. The surrounding legend, reading XPS VINCIT XPS RENAT XPS IMPERAT E in Latin majuscules, proclaims the sovereignty of Christ—a formula of Carolingian origin long associated with French royal coinage. The field and legend are consistent with the hammered production technique characteristic of early sixteenth-century French royal gold coinage. |
