Obverse description At center, the crowned royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a large ornate crown, all contained within an inner beaded circle. The circumferential legend, rendered in Gothic-influenced Latin capitals, reads HENRICVS IIII D G FRAN ET NAVA REX with the date 1594 positioned at the top of the field near the legend. The shield is rendered with fine detail, displaying three fleurs-de-lis in the traditional French heraldic arrangement. The overall style is characteristic of late sixteenth-century French hammered gold coinage.
