Reverse description Central motif is a floriated cross pattée with fleurs-de-lis terminating each arm, a small annulet at the centre, and four crowned Fs — the royal cipher of François I — placed in the four angles between the arms, alternating with additional decorative elements. A radiate sun or stylised solar burst issues from behind the cross, giving the type its designation as the 'écu au soleil.' The design is contained within a beaded inner circle, and the circumferential Latin legend of the Christus vincit formula runs around the outer field.
