| Beschrijving keerzijde | An ornate Gothic cross with fleurs-de-lis terminals occupies the central field, its arms boldly raised in high relief. The four cantons of the cross are charged alternately with two crowned ermines — alluding to the Duchy of Brittany — and two crowned letter A's, the initial of Queen Anne of Brittany, Louis XII's consort. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with a continuous Latin devotional legend running within the outer border. The composition reflects the heraldic fusion of the French royal house with the Breton duchy following the union of 1499. |
