Odo IV held Burgundy as a French royal appanage and spent much of his reign navigating the dynastic chaos following the extinction of the direct Capetian line in 1328. His gold écus were struck at a moment when French royal coinage was being aggressively debased, making ducal issues from semi-independent lords like Odo politically charged objects — assertions of minting rights that Paris periodically attempted to curtail. The Burgundian mint at this period operated under recurrent royal pressure to conform to royal weight standards, a tension that produced measurable inconsistencies across surviving specimens.
