Eagles and lions occupy the terminal lobes at the four ends of the cross arms, alternating in heraldic fashion, while rosettes fill the exterior angles between the lobes. The overall design is characteristic of the French royal ecu d'or type adapted for Flemish comital coinage, with the christogram legend encircling the entire composition in the surrounding legend band. |

Louis I of Nevers was a committed ally of the French crown, which put him in an impossible position once Edward III of England moved to strangle Flemish wool imports in 1336. The Flemish cloth towns — Ghent, Bruges, Ypres — depended entirely on English wool, and when Edward cut the supply, the guilds effectively forced Louis out. He spent much of this coin's issue window as a fugitive count, his authority over the mints nominal at best, before dying at Crécy in 1346 fighting for the French king who had caused his ruin.
