Obverse description Draped bust of Joan of Albret facing right, her hair elaborately coiffed and partially covered, set within a beaded inner border. The mint mark and letter P appear at the base of the bust below the truncation. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery reading IOANA D G RE NAVA D BE P, identifying the issuer as Joan, by the grace of God, Queen of Navarre and Lady of Béarn. The portrait is rendered in the Renaissance style characteristic of mid-sixteenth century French minting.
