Obverse description Central shield of arms bearing the ox of Béarn passant on a plain field, surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate fleurons. The crowned shield is set within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding legend reading clockwise in Gothic-influenced Latin capitals. The overall composition is characteristic of late medieval French feudal coinage, executed in the hammered technique with bold relief. The crown above the escutcheon features prominent points and is rendered in fine detail consistent with early sixteenth-century die-cutting practice.
