Obverse description A full-length, facing figure of the Archangel Michael, clad in suit of armour, stands in the central field brandishing a sword in his right hand while supporting a shield bearing the French royal arms (fleurs-de-lis) with his left. The angel's wings are spread prominently behind the figure, rendered in fine hammered relief characteristic of late-medieval French goldsmith work. A vanquished dragon lies prostrate beneath the angel's feet. The surrounding legend in uncial Gothic lettering reads LVDOVICVS DEI GRA FRAnCORVM REX, separated from the inner field by a double-beaded inner circle.
