Volsinii — modern Orvieto — was one of the principal cities of the Etruscan League, and this issue belongs to a narrow window of Etruscan gold coinage produced under intense pressure from Rome's expanding reach across central Italy. The city fell to Roman forces in 265 BC, its population forcibly relocated, and the mint ceased entirely. Coins struck here exist in very small numbers precisely because the issuing authority was destroyed, not merely absorbed.
The as-based denomination system used by Etruscan mints reflects deliberate alignment with Roman monetary reckoning — a political calculation, not coincidence.
