背面描述 A broad curved line traverses the field horizontally, serving as the principal geometric motif of this highly abstract reverse type. Numerous pellets are distributed irregularly on either side of this line, while thin crescent forms appear both above and below, all that remains of the horse and wheel imagery of the Durotrigan prototype. The overall composition reflects the terminal stage of stylistic degradation characteristic of late Durotrigan quarter staters, in which recognisable iconographic elements have dissolved entirely into geometric arrangements.

附加信息

The Durotriges occupied the territory roughly corresponding to modern Dorset and Somerset, and their coinage represents one of the more dramatic degradation sequences in Celtic numismatics — abstract descendants of the Macedonian gold stater of Philip II, progressively abstracted over generations until the original imagery became entirely geometric. This piece falls within that dissolution, Van Arsdell 1231-01 placing it in the final pre-conquest phase before the tribe's contact with Caesar's Gallic campaigns reshaped regional trade networks and minting behavior.
