Tincomarus was a son of Commius — the Atrebatic king who had served as Caesar's envoy in Gaul before spectacularly defecting and leading guerrilla resistance against Roman forces in Britain. By the time Tincomarus issued this coinage, the politics had reversed entirely: he styled himself on coins as "son of Commius" while simultaneously cultivating close ties with Augustus, a relationship confirmed by his appearance in the Res Gestae as a British dynast who sought refuge at the Roman court after being expelled by a rival, almost certainly his own brother Eppillus.
