Tasciovanos ruled the Catuvellauni from roughly the mid-first century BC into the early first century AD, operating out of Verulamium — present-day St Albans — and at times striking coins that bear the mint signature VER. His coinage represents one of the earliest uses of named royal authority on British Celtic issues, almost certainly borrowed in concept from contact with Roman Gaul. The quarter stater denomination circulated as a high-value transactional piece in an economy where bullion weight still mattered more than face value.
