The Selsey series takes its name from the Selsey Peninsula in West Sussex, where a major hoard find in the nineteenth century first defined this coinage for scholars. The Atrebates — whose continental relatives struck coins in what is now northern France and Belgium — brought the tradition of stater coinage to Britain, likely arriving before Caesar's expeditions of 55 and 54 BC reshaped tribal politics across the southeast. Quarter staters of this type circulated as genuine transactional currency rather than prestige pieces, turning up in settlement contexts rather than exclusively in hoards.
