Gold 1/4 Stater - Regni Ratham Wreath

The Atrebates are believed to have migrated to southern Britain from the Belgic regions of Gaul sometime in the late second or early first century BC, bringing with them a coinage tradition derived ultimately from the gold staters of Philip II of Macedon — distorted through generations of stylistic abstraction as the types passed west and north across the Channel. By the time quarter staters of this type were struck, the original imagery had been reduced to near-geometric fragments, the wreath motif one of the few recognizable survivors of that long transmission.

ABC 611 is associated with the period before named rulers appear on Atrebatic coinage — Tincomarus and Eppillus would not claim the series for another generation or more.
