| Aversbeschreibung | Highly stylised and abstracted head of Apollo facing right, rendered in the characteristic Celtic geometric idiom. A very narrow wreath with diminutive leaves frames the head at a pronounced angle above and below the hairbar. A two-line hairbar (rendered as a spike) traverses the wreath, punctuated by a ringed pellet at the centre and at each terminal. The Atrebates occupied territory roughly corresponding to modern Berkshire, Hampshire, and West Sussex, and their coinage tradition derived from Gallo-Belgic prototypes imported — or carried — across the Channel during the preceding century. The "Hastings Cog" designation reflects the findspot distribution that defines this subtype, with concentrations in East Sussex suggesting a distinct circulation zone from related Atrebatic issues.
Quarter staters of this class were almost certainly used in elite exchange rather than everyday commerce — the denomination is too small by weight for routine market transactions but fits patterns of gift-giving, tribute, or mercenary payment attested across Late Iron Age southern Britain.
