The obverse bears the bold Latin legend CALLEV in large raised letters occupying the central field, an abbreviation for Calleva Atrebatum, the tribal capital. A six-pointed star or asterisk device is positioned above the inscription and a second matching six-pointed star appears below, each rendered in a characteristic Late Iron Age pellet-and-ray style. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hand-struck Celtic gold coinage of this period. The overall design is geometric and epigraphic in character, with no figural portrait, reflecting the transitional Romanising tendency of the Atrebatic rulers. |
