The Dobunni occupied the Cotswolds and Severn valley region and were among the more economically sophisticated of the southern British tribes, maintaining trade networks that extended into Gaul well before Caesar's expeditions of 55–54 BC. Quarter staters of this type circulated as fractional currency in high-value exchanges, likely livestock or bride-price transactions rather than everyday commerce.
