Aversbeschreibung Highly stylised abstract design derived from a debased classical prototype, presenting a schematised figural composition interpreted variously as a boar facing left, or as 'three men in a boat' and 'wolf and twins' motifs. The body is rendered with a pierced or hollow treatment, with pronounced bristle-like projections along the dorsal line. A reversed S-form pellet device appears in front of the legs, and a pellet rosette occupies the right field. The execution is characteristic of Late Iron Age Celtic die engraving, with bold, fluid curves replacing naturalistic detail.

Reversbeschreibung Geometric and devolved chariot-type reverse composed of abstract linear elements. In the upper left, an inverse Y-shaped bar dominates, while the upper right displays a rectangular block with radiating lines representing a highly schematised or devolved tree motif. A right-angled step occupies the central field, with a secondary Y-shaped bar positioned in the inner angle of the step. The lower left field bears a raised patch with a stippled surface texture, a diagnostic feature of this specific variety within the Atrebatic quarter stater series.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The Atrebates were among the tribes directly disrupted by Caesar's two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC, and the political pressure those campaigns generated almost certainly accelerated the region's coin production. Quarter staters of this type are thought to have circulated as a fractional currency within a gift and tribute economy rather than a market one — their denominations tracking social obligation more than commercial exchange. The stippled surface treatment distinguishes this variant at the die level, a deliberate decorative choice that separates it from plainer Af2 issues catalogued in the same sequence.
