The Atrebates occupied the territory roughly corresponding to modern Berkshire, Hampshire, and West Sussex — the same ground Julius Caesar crossed during his British expeditions of 55 and 54 BC. These fractional gold pieces circulated within a tribal economy where coins functioned as much as prestige objects and gift-exchange tokens as everyday transaction currency.
