| Reverse description | A schematised horse advances to the left, its body rendered in the abstract Celtic manner with disjointed limbs and a distinctive ladder-pattern mane formed by a series of transverse bars. Three flowing tails stream behind the hindquarters, a hallmark feature of this type. A large circular ornament or ring pellet device is placed prominently above the horse's back. Additional pellet and crescentic motifs occupy the field, consistent with the decorative vocabulary of the Atrebatic gold quarter stater series. |

This type belongs to the period immediately surrounding Caesar's two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC, when the Atrebates under Commius — a Gaulish chieftain appointed by Caesar himself as client-king — were navigating an increasingly unstable relationship with Rome. Commius eventually defected, becoming one of Caesar's most determined enemies in the Gallic uprising of 52 BC. Whether coins of this type were struck before or after that rupture remains debated, but the dating places them squarely within that political fracture.
